Torquay police officers have played wildlife rescuers, after finding a joey on the Great Ocean Road.

The little joey was sadly found trying to climb back inside its mothers pouch, who was seen deceased in the middle of the road.

Police stopped to remove the kangaroo when they spotted the baby, with Constable Pieta Linberg giving up her beanie to help keep the joey warm until Wildlife Rescue arrived.

A police spokesperson said the Torquay team ‘reluctantly gave the joey over to Wildlife Rescue to have it expertly taken care of.

Police have asked anyone who comes across sick or injured wildlife to contact Wildlife Rescue Australia.
