Two arrested after police fire at allegedly stolen car

Two people are in custody after a major police operation in Newtown that saw an allegedly stolen car reverse into a school bus.

The stolen Kia Optima was spotted by the Air Wing near the intersection of the Princes Highway and Roebuck Street around 3:40pm.

It’s alleged the vehicle reversed into the bus while trying to flee, before driving towards officers who then discharged their firearm.

The two occupants, a man and woman from New South Wales, both aged 37, attempted to flee on foot but were arrested nearby.

They have both been taken to hospital under police guard, the man with a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the arm and the woman with minor injuries.

The female driver of a civilian vehicle was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

As is standard practice when a police firearm is discharged, Armed Crime Squad detectives will investigate the incident with Professional Standards Command oversight.

It’s alleged the vehicle was stolen in New South Wales.
