Upgrade funds for bushfire blackspots

The federal government will spend $20 million upgrading mobile coverage in areas of high bushfire risk as we brace for a potentially disastrous summer.

Greater Geelong is among the regions with poor mobile reception expected to get a slice of the pie.

The Gold Coast and Newcastle are also in the mix for the round of funding for areas on the edge of major cities where the bush meets the suburbs.

The second round of the peri-urban mobile program gives funding to mobile network operators and infrastructure providers to upgrade services in regions suffering from longstanding coverage and reception issues.

The Commonwealth is also urging telco operators to collaborate on infrastructure sharing, to ensure Australians have the widest coverage possible.
