Viva Energy has revealed the cause of April’s fire at the Corio refinery.

It’s been blamed on a piping failure at the facility with repairs to take until next year.

The group says it continues to look at what happened in terms of the fire.

“The company continues to investigate the cause of the incident and is working with insurers regarding property damage and business interruption,” it said in a statement.

“While investigations remain ongoing, preliminary information indicates that the incident was due to failure of a section of piping within the Alkylation unit, releasing fuel which ignited.

“The immediate response to the incident by our refining team contained the fire and minimised the impact to people and the rest of the plant.”

Viva says production at the refinery will return to 90 percent of capacity this week.
