The newest member of Werribee Open Range Zoo officially has a name.
Jabulani is a three-week-old Southern White Rhino calf, born at the zoo on August 18.
His name means ‘bringing joy’ and ‘rejoice’ in the Zulu dialect.
Both Jabulani and mother Kipenzi are both doing well, after a 16-month pregnancy.
Sohpie Gray from the Zoo said it was delightful to see the pair bonding.
“He’s so confident and inquisitive,” she said.
“We’re also seeing him participate in some mock charges, which is a natural behaviour that is his way of telling us that he’s the boss.
“He puts his head down and nose towards the ground and charges forwards, then jumps on the spot and turns around quickly. It is very cute!”
Both Jabulani and Kipenzi are currently being kept away from the other rhinos.
However Zoos Victoria says the calf will soon be introduced to the wider rhino crash and then the Savannah, where the public will be able to meet him.
