Local footballers have just over two months to prepare for rule changes that will be introduced into the AFL in 2026, with four adopted across all levels in AFL Barwon competition this year.

The local governing body has informed clubs that some of the tweaks made at the game’s highest level will flow down to the Geelong, Bellarine, and AFL Barwon women’s and underage competitions.

It is understood that the GDFNL will leave the decision on introducing the new rules and interpretations up to its clubs.

A ‘last possession’ rule has been played at various levels in the region, most notably in reserve grade.

However, that will become ‘last disposal’ across all sections and age groups, and applies to a clear kick or handball that goes out of bounds between the 50m arcs.

“This rule interpretation will replace the last possession rule that is officiated across competitions,” AFL Barwon said in an email.

Also being introduced locally are changes to centre ball-ups, shrugging in the tackle, and ruck nominations.

“At all centre ball-ups, a competing ruck cannot cross the centre circle line and engage with the opposition ruck, prior to contesting the football,” AFL Barwon continued.

“A shrug in a tackle will be deemed prior opportunity (i.e. an attempt to evade or fend an opponent).

“Around the ground, the umpire may restart play without a nominated ruck present.

“The aim is to get play starting again as soon as possible once the area is clear.”
