Bellarine president Michael Fitzgerald says timing worked against the league’s request to be granted “Premier” status by AFL Victoria during the off-season.

Fitzgerald says following new appointments to the Bellarine board, they will put together a revised application with the hope of joining the GFNL as a Premier League in 2027.

“The commentary we had back from Jack Henty at AFL Vic at the time was that there wasn’t enough time,” Fitzgerald told K rock Football prior to the Good Friday clash between Geelong Amateur and Modewarre.

“And there was implications throughout the state for a change of status for clubs that might have recruited someone from the Bellarine earlier.

“We’ve probably taken, not necessarily a step back, we’ve taken a re-look at our application, in the sense that we’re putting a bit more strategy around it, with ‘Preecy’ (Peter Preece) and ‘Clarky’ (Damian Clark) coming on (the Bellarine board).

“That’ll be a work in progress”.
