Marquee Surf Coast signing Aaron Black is planning for his stint with the club to last longer than the club’s inaugural season in the Bellarine League.
The former Geelong and North Melbourne player was unveiled by the Suns last week as they prepare to join the competition in 2026.
“I’d love it to be more (than one year), but we’ll see how my body goes,” Torquay-based Black said.
“I’ve had a couple of surgeries here and there, but with my role at the Cats operations, I get out on the track and help with a little bit of development coaching.
“So, you stay active, and you have to get out there and wrestle with them, run against them, and do things like that. I’m very lucky in that regard, that I have to keep fit to do that.
“I still feel like I’m at a level where I can play some good footy at that level.
“I’ll take it year by year, but hopefully it’s a bit longer.”
Black, featured in the Bellarine with Modewarre in 2022, was first approached by president Jay Williams about joining Surf Coast over a year ago.
He says the lure of playing at the same club his children will represent was hard to resist.
“Jay just flicked me a text and said, ‘I see your young fella does Auskick and we’d be keen to have a chat’,” Black, who has made one appearance this year with Warrnambool, said.
“And I was, ‘yeah, bloody oath’.”
“It was funny because being involved around footy in Geelong, I knew the Suns were coming into the comp.
“And I always said to Laura and my wife, ‘Well, if I’m still able, I’m going to play because it’d be cool to play at the same club that makes a home club for us and that our boys will play at as well’.”
“I’m excited about it.”
Black says he enjoyed his previous stint with the Warriors, where he kicked 24 goals in 11 games, but has been impressed with how the Bellarine is more even than it has been for much of its history.
“I reckon it’s a great comp,” he said. “This year, it’s a close competition.
“It seems like it’s really evened up a bit, so the Suns will have to get a few handy players in.
“I love the whole town vs. town aspect of it as well. It reminds me of back home in WA.”
