MITCH Herbison is an overwhelming pre-season favourite to add an Ash Medal to his lengthy list of football accolades.
And it might not be only the Ash that the Barwon Heads co-coach will have in his possession come the end of the season, with rival captains tipping the Seagulls to challenge for consecutive premierships.
While Herbison received five captains’ support to claim the BFL’s highest individual honour, six skippers have backed Barwon Heads to feature in the final match of the season.
2019 runner-up Torquay was the only other club to receive votes, with four captains backing the Tigers to return to the decider.
The Seagulls and Tigers were unanimous selections to play finals, with Drysdale – which hasn’t featured in the finals since 2013 – tipped by six captains to climb back into the finals.
2019 finalists Geelong Amateur (five), Anglesea (five) and Modewarre (four) were also well supported.
Newcomb, which recruited strongly heading into the aborted 2020 season, and has added some handy names in recent months, had the backing of two skippers to play finals for the first time since winning the 2007 premiership.
Power skipper Logan Wagener, who has been training with VFL club Werribee, was selected by three rival leaders to win the Ash Medal.
Not surprisingly, Anglesea spearhead Jordan Erskine was a unanimous selection to top the goalkicking table for a second time.
*Captains couldn’t vote for players from their own club for Ash Medal or leading goalkicker.
