A ‘good opportunity’ for Hawks

DRYSDALE coach Ben Carmichael says this weekend’s top-of-the-table BFNL clash against the undefeated Tigers will give his side a good idea of where it sits, just a couple of weeks out from finals.

The Hawks are sitting up in second spot after a gritty 43-point win over Newcomb in Round 16, the same spot they finished last season before a Preliminary Final exit.

“It’s probably come at the right time for us to take on Torquay,” Carmichael said ahead of the match at McCartney Oval.

“They’re obviously an unbelievable side but it’s just a good opportunity to see where we’re at leading into finals.”

The last time the two sides met it was a comfortable 33-point Torquay win, but Carmichael’s confident the Hawks will improve on the Round 8 matchup.

“We’re starting to get a few guys back,” he said.

“We think we can still improve, we’ve been playing good footy but there’s certainly plenty of improvement still.

“We’re still trying to figure that out leading into that first final.”

Carmichael said Drysdale will need a consistent four-quarter performance to be a chance to compete against Torquay on Saturday.

“They’re just too good if you have lapses.

“As we’ve seen last time they score quickly.

“We’ll have to go down there and perform our best to be competitive and certainly have a crack at winning.

“But we’re confident in the way we’re playing at the moment so we think if we can play our best footy, we’ll be in the game.”
