A broken leg suffered by Newcomb’s Jean Paul Dumont has brought an early end to the Bellarine reserve grade clash with Ocean Grove.
A MICA paramedic and ambulance were called to Ray Menzies Oval during the third quarter.
“It happened at about the 12 or 13-minute mark of the third quarter in a contest,” Newcomb president Matt Farrow said.
“A group of players; he was running back for a mark, and he got pushed, and unfortunately, he’s broken his leg.
“They called the game off. He’ll be operated on today (Sunday), and I’m not sure how long he’ll be in the hospital for.”
Farrow paid tribute to those who assisted Dumont, who has made 12 senior appearances since arriving at Grinter Reserve from South Barwon ahead of the 2021 season.
Among them was teammate Jesse Prato, who is a trainee doctor.
“Ocean Grove was fantastic,” Farrow said “We’re very lucky that we’ve got a trainee doctor as part of our team as well.
“He was able to provide the necessary support straight away; he was in really good hands, along with our club medical team.
Newcomb was leading 4.4 (28) to 3.8 (26) at the time of the incident, which will result in the Power taking the four points under AFL Barwon rules, which state the score stands if a match is abandoned after half-time.
The win keeps Newcomb a game outside the top five with three rounds remaining.
As a result, the start to the senior clash between the Power and the Grubbers was delayed by ten minutes.
It’s the third time this season a Bellarine reserves clash has been called off due to injury.
