Premiership-winning Anglesea coach Jordan Keras has urged AFL Barwon to make the return of interleague a “high priority”, and has raised the prospect of the Bellarine and Geelong leagues going head-to-head.

The BFNL and GFNL haven’t taken part in senior representative football since before COVID, with the Bellarine beating the Geelong and District league, Geelong losing its No.1 ranking to the Northern League on the same day at Queens Park in May 2019.

The GDFNL helped revitalise the concept locally last year, featuring in an under-25 contest against Colac and District, with that concept to continue in 2026.

“I think it should be a high priority for the region,” Keras said.

“I think the majority of clubs would want to put their hand up to be involved in a great game like that.”

Keras joins highly-regarded rivals Dom Gleeson (Torquay) and Heath Jamieson (Queenscliff) in wanting a return of representative football.

“I think our competition’s in a really good place at the moment,” Jamieson told K rock Football on April 22 last year.

“It’s got some really good players in it, and it’s strong.

“I don’t for one think that there’s not a gap between GFL and BFL, but I think if you look at the better players in the Bellarine, I think they could compete with the better players in the GFL.”

Keras is confident there would be a worthwhile buy-in from players across both leagues, despite the only available weekend for such a contest being when both leagues have a bye on July 4.

“I can only speak on behalf of some of my players and the better players that we have,” he said.

“But I just think that in general, why wouldn’t you want to play with the best players in the competition that you’re playing?

“There’s always going to be the discussion around injuries and teams wanting their players picked.

“From my aspect, I wouldn’t have a problem with the best players at Anglesea getting picked to play in a game on a bye.

“I think. If they’re available and they want to play, I would think that a lot of guys would put their hand up, for sure.”
