Two-time Bellarine leading goalkicker Scott Hughes and one-time Colac and District league medallist Tyler Flanigan have been unveiled as Surf Coast’s latest signings.
A member of Torquay’s 2017 premiership team, kicking four goals, Hughes won the now-named ‘Chooka’ Piec Medal in 2012 and 2013.
He spent this year with GDFNL preliminary finalist Bell Post Hill, but didn’t play in the second half of the season.
The Suns, where he will be a playing assistant coach, is the 34-year-old’s third Bellarine club following a short stint with Modewarre in 2023.
A midfielder, Flanigan won the Jack Mahoney Medal in 2023 with Irrewarra-Beeac.
He featured in the Bombers’ grand final team last year before joining Southern league club East Brighton.
A Colac junior, he played two senior games with the Tigers in 2019 before joining Irrewarra-Beeac post-COVID.
Flanignan has also played in the Northern Territory league with PINT.
Hughes and Flanigan join 2018 Ocean Grove best-and-fairest Luke Cartelli, Flanigan’s former Irrewarra-Beeac teammate Mitch Gaunt, and Zac Warne (Lake Boga) as signings announced in recent weeks.
Meanwhile, new Portarlington coach Sam Scott has tapped into his Leopold links by adding forward Sam McDonald.
The 22-year-old played four senior games for the Lions last year before joining Mininera and District club Glenthompson Dunkeld, where he kicked 31 goals, helping the club to the finals.
