Ocean Grove co-coach Dave Farrell says whether he and Nick Bourke continue in their roles in 2027 is “going to be the easiest conversation of all time”.
The pair are out of contract, and Farrell says they’ll be comfortable with whatever decision the Grubbers’ hierarchy makes for next year.
“If we’re the right guys to go forward with, then absolutely (we’ll go on),” Farrell said.
“And if we’re not, then we’ll be the biggest supporters and hopefully still be able to play a role around the place.
“It’s my home club, I live in town, (and) I want to see the club successful. That was the only driver to jump on board when the opportunity came up.
“Whatever it takes to make the club get back to where they should be.”
Farrell took over from Pete Davey heading into the 2023 season, with Bourke joining him a year later.
However, since football returned to normal after the cancelled 2020 season and a truncated 2021, in which Ocean Grove had won its way into a first semi-final before another Covid lockdown put paid to that campaign, it has finished no higher than 8th on the ladder.
Last year, despite four wins, the Grubbers finished with the wooden spoon for the first time since 1971.
“The term we get asked a lot is from the outside: ‘What’s wrong? Where’s the improvement going to come?’,” Farrell said.
“And a big town should have really strong representation.
“We’re really aware of that and know that we’ve got a role to play in it.”
