Winchelsea coach Ben Moloney spent last night in hospital after suffering a fractured larynx during yesterday’s loss to East Geelong.

The first-year Blues coach, who came out of retirement last month, was the victim of a fend-off to the throat during the second quarter at Richmond Crescent.

“He was spitting a bit of blood yesterday and ended up at the Epworth (Hospital) and was transferred over to Barwon Health (University Hospital Geelong),” president Daniel Greskie said.

“We’ve found out now he’s got a fracture in the larynx.

“He seems pretty good. He’ll come home today and be able to return to work.”

However, Moloney won’t see any on-field action for up to six weeks in a further blow to the injury-hit club.

“We’ve lost a couple of on-field leaders with our Fin Parish types, and Caleb Brown’s been injured for a bit,” Greskie said.

“To jump in on the field with such a young group, he’s really enjoyed it and had a huge impact on us.”

Meanwhile, Greskie says discussions around Moloney extending his tenure into 2026 are expected to ramp up early next month.

“We will start negotiations in the next week or two, so all looking pretty promising,” he said.

“We’ve just got to tick it off with the wife and a few family and that sort of stuff.

“Hopefully, the deal will be done pretty soon.”
