Corio has led the tributes for popular defender Jimmy Onturk following his death on Sunday night at the age of 58.

Onturk played 104 senior games across nine seasons with the Devils from 1991-99, and finished runner-up in their best-and-fairest in 1998.

“Jimmy was a highly respected teammate, a valued member of our community, and a rock at centre half-back in some of the great senior Devils teams of the 1990s,” a post on the club’s Facebook said.

“Beyond football, Jimmy was a well-known local businessman whose pizza shop became a regular stop for many in the Devils family.

“After a night out in town, it wasn’t uncommon to see teammates, supporters and friends calling in on the way home for a pizza, a chat and Jimmy’s friendly smile.

“His business was just another way he brought people together and became part of the fabric of our club and community.”

Onturk also played locally with North Geelong, Bell Post Hill, and former Colac and District club Forrest, before going on to represent Geelong Masters with distinction, earning selection for Victoria.

His business, Jimmy’z Good Food Cafe in North Geelong, was a sponsor of the club.

“Jimmy Onturk was more than just a player,” a statement on the Geelong Masters Facebook page said.

“He was larger than life, a friend, a mentor and a pillar of our community. He supported us on and off the field.

“Whether it be for a quick coffee and a laugh or a can and a catch-up, there was always a smile with those perfect teeth.

“We will miss you, mate.”

Retired Member for Lara and former Victorian minister for sport, John Eren, also paid homage.

“Words cannot describe my sadness at the loss of my dear friend Jimmy Onturk,” he wrote.

“I’ve known Jimmy for 30 years, and he was one of the kindest, funniest, and most loyal mates I’ve ever had.

“He had the biggest heart, and I will miss him terribly. My heart goes out to all of his family and friends.

“Jimmy was loved deeply, and that love doesn’t go away.”

Corio Soccer Club also paid tribute.

“Jimmy was part of the fabric of our club for many years,” a Facebook post said.

“He’d played for Corio, served on the committee, sponsored the club and remained a loyal supporter through so many seasons.

“More than anything, Jimmy was simply one of the kindest people you could meet. Always willing to help, always supportive, always community-minded and always there for the people around him.

“This is a huge loss to our club, to the wider community and most of all to his family and friends.”
