East Geelong’s Sam King has held on to win the Ivan Tansing Medal as GDFNL reserve grade best-and-fairest despite missing the majority of the second half of the season.
Polling 18 votes to Round 11, King was promoted to the Eagles’ senior line-up in Round 12, but then headed overseas for five weeks, returning for the final round clash with Inverleigh, where he didn’t poll.
However, the challengers never seriously came.
Belmont Lions recruit Brooklyn Johnston, who trailed by four when the reading of votes went live at Round 14, spent rounds 10-13 in the seniors, then didn’t play again.
Bannockburn’s Brayden Viccars finished runner-up on 15 votes after polling two votes in Round 18. He finished equal sixth in 2024.
Johnston shared third with East Geelong’s Chris Warwick, who won the goalkicking award in the reserves after finishing with 70 majors.
Werribee Centrals’ Ryan Young and Thomson veteran Chris Scott shared fifth spot with 13 votes apiece.
King is the fourth player from Eastern Suburbs/East Geelong to win the Tansing Medal since it became a reserves award in 1996, joining Denis Peters (1997, 2001), Andrew Ruiter (2003, 2011), and Dale Lappin (2022)
