Lions roar late again

For the second week in a row, the Belmont Lions have held their opponent goalless in the final quarter, keeping North Geelong to a solitary behind in beating the reigning premier by 35 points.

Leading by just three points at the final change, the Lions wrestled away control thanks to goals from Jesse Stapleton, Michael Murdoch, and big man Jed Evans in the first ten minutes of the last quarter,

Late goals to recruit Steve Gunter and a second for the term for Murdoch put the finishing touches on a 16.11 (107) to 11.6 (72) victory.

Ben Evans was best in front of goal, finishing with four, while Jed Evans was named the Lions’ best.

For North Geelong, which was held to its lowest score of the season, Cooper Vaughan kicked three goals and was named the Magpies’ best.

The Lions’ next assignment is a home meeting with the unbeaten Werribee Centrals, while after three consecutive home matches, North Geelong faces Bell Post Hill at Myers Reserve

Bannockburn squared its win-loss ledger at 2-2 after an important 46-point win over Bell Post Hill at Victoria Park, 12.18 (90) to 5.14 (44).

Leopold recruit Henry Hawker finished with four goals for the Tigers.

Five goals from Kur Kur helped Werribee Centrals remain unbeaten after holding off a plucky Thomson by 20 points, 11.12 (78) to 8.10 (58) at Godfrey Street.

Veteran Paul Davis kicked five majors for the Tigers.

Inverleigh jumped to second on the ladder after seeing off Anakie by 69 points at AA Semi-Trailers Oval.

Key forward Mason Dickson and Noah Sneskov each kicked three goals in the 17.19 (121) to 7.10 (52) victory.

Despite missing Joel Bennett, Corio has broken through for its first win of the season, holding off Geelong West by nine points at Scaada Stadium.

A five-goal haul from the dynamic Herschelle Carr proved the difference in the 11.14 (80) to 10.11 (71) result.
