One of the GDFNL’s most potent forward lines could be about to get stronger.

After welcoming back Jake Watson-Serle for last weekend’s win over Thomson, East Geelong young gun Hugh Menzies is set to return to action for the first time since last year’s finals series following pre-season shoulder surgery.

Eagles coach Ned Aulsebrook confirmed Menzies, who has taken on a role under development coach Jeremy Power while sidelined, would likely play in the reserves clash with Inverleigh on July 20 following this weekend’s bye.

“He’s been doing a fitness block with Jayden (McLauchlan) over the last couple of months, so he’s in good hands there,” Aulsebrook said.

“We’re not sure what that’s going to look like for the rest of the year for him.

“But, he’s certainly happy to be back amongst the group. He trained on Thursday night, and he’s just a legend to have around the club.

“So, that the boys up and about a little bit to hear that he’s back after the bye.”

Aulsebrook hasn’t ruled out Menzies playing a role in East Geelong’s push for a first senior premiership since 2009.

He burst onto the scene in 2021 with seven goals on debut as a 17-year-old, and has tallied 43 goals from 31 games.

“If he plays enough games, he’ll qualify for the twos (reserve grade finals),” Aulsebrook said.

“Then who knows what happens from there as far as selection goes.

“I’ve never seen him play, but I’m hearing some pretty special things about how he goes about it.

“So, we’ll have to see what happens and go from there.”
