Smith caps comeback with second Tansing

A final-round best-on-ground performance has seen Winchelsea midfielder Jackson Smith become a two-time winner of the Ivan Tansing Medal as GDFNL reserve-grade best-and-fairest.

Smith attracted three votes in the win over Geelong West, which secured the Blues’ spot in the finals, to finish on 22, three clear of Bell Post Hill great Renn Lovitt on 19.

A former winner of Winchelsea’s senior best-and-fairest, Smith, who became a father earlier this month, returned to football this year after sitting out the previous three seasons.

All but the three votes he received in Round 18 were polled in a stunning seven-match run through the middle of the season.

Smith polled two votes in Round 6 before reeling off five consecutive best-on-ground performances.

After missing Round 12, he returned to pick up two votes in Round 13.

Lovitt, who made four senior appearances between rounds 8-12, joined Smith on 19 votes with a best-on-ground performance in Round 17,

However, the veteran ruck didn’t poll in the Panthers’ Round 18 loss to second semi-final opponent Belmont Lions.

Inverleigh’s Xavier Lewis polled three votes in the win over North Geelong in the final round to claim third place, with Centurion Regan Vesty a vote further back in fourth.
