Bond flies Eagles’ nest

Lachie Bond has become the third big-name loss for Newtown & Chilwell this off-season after signing with Ballarat League club Redan.

Bond, who spent three seasons with the Eagles, has been unveiled as a recruit by Redan on social media, with the Eagles confirming his departure to K rock Football.

He joins star midfield duo Matt Boag (Torquay) and Blake Sutterby (Geelong Amateur) in departing Elderslie Reserve.

Bond made 43 appearances for the ‘Towners after arriving ahead of the 2021 season, kicking 76 goals.

The Maryborough product won their goalkicking in 2022 and 2023 with 37 and 33 goals, respectively,

He made four appearances for six goals with Geelong’s VFL lineup in 2022 and played one game with Carlton in 2021.

He is expected to remain with the Cats.

Meanwhile, GDFNL club East Geelong has added to its off-season haul with two signings, including the brother of an Australian basketball representative.

Jacob Sobey, brother of Olympic bronze medalist Nathan, arrives at Richmond Crescent from Warrack Eagles in the Wimmera League.

Originally from Warrnambool, Sobey is expected to help fill the ruck role vacated by retired Whitley medalist Tim McLennan.

East has also added Lachie Zimmer from Bendigo League club Sandhurst.

He played 62 games and kicked 67 goals at senior level, but made just one appearance at 2 o’clock in 2023.
