DENIED the opportunity by COVID, St Mary’s will finally get the chance to unfurl its 2019 GFL premiership flag next month.
And it’s an occasion first-year Saints skipper Jack Blood is looking forward to, which coincides with the official opening of the refurbished Don Mathieson Pavilion as they host Leopold under lights on April 10.
It has been a long wait, but we all worked hard, and we deserve to see that happen,” Blood said.
“It’ll be unreal to see it go up in front of our new rooms and in front of our family and friends who have come to support us every week.”
Blood, who would have been the GFL’s youngest-ever captains in 2020, also can’t wait to lead his team onto Anthony Costa Oval for the first time.
“I am looking forward to it, but I don’t think it’s too much of a hassle either,” he said.
“I’m still another player in the team; it’s not too much on my shoulders or anything like that.
“I’m excited for what’s to come.”
While 2019 premiership skipper Jacob Welsh has departed the club for Gold Coast club Broadbeach, Blood has still been able to tap into his knowledge.
“Welshy’s really good with it,” Blood said. “We’ve had long conversations and texts, and he’s given me some ideas to run with on how I should be a leader.
“But he’s let me do my own thing, too.
“He’s been really helpful.”
