Confident in its long-term sustainability, Lara has confirmed it will return to the GFNL in 2027 after formally notifying AFL Barwon of its intention to field senior and reserve-grade teams.
The Cats, who spent this year in recess, finalised their decision at a meeting of its newly-formed executive sub-committee last (Tuesday) night.
They also confirmed the appointment of club stalwart Bernie Walker as president, which will be ratified at their annual general meeting on October 19.
However, despite not meeting Lara Future Planning Group’s criteria of having a senior coach appointed by the Go/No-Go date of October 1, the Cats say discussions are continuing with prospective candidates, with plans to make appointments public at the AGM.
“Lara is on its way back in 2027, and we could not be more pleased to say so,” Walker said in a statement released overnight.
“We believe the criteria set by the Future Planning Group have been met, the foundations are in place, and our coaching discussions are in their final stages.
“We are taking the time to get those appointments right, and we look forward to announcing them soon.”
The statement also confirmed Lara’s return to A-grade and thanked the club’s sponsors for their continued commitment.
“The club’s return would not be possible without the people and partners who stood by it through a difficult year,” the statement said.
“Lara Football and Netball Club thanks every one of its sponsors for staying with the club during the recess.
“Their loyalty kept the club on its feet when there were no senior games to show for it, and it will not be forgotten.
“The club also thanks its members and players, whose patience, commitment and belief in Lara made this return possible, along with the volunteers and the wider Lara community who never stopped backing the club.”
AFL Barwon is expected to respond later today (Wednesday).
More to come
