ALEX Cincotta says being a step closer to his dream of playing an AFL game “hasn’t sunk in just yet”.
The Newtown & Chilwell product has been rewarded for an outstanding VFL season at Carlton last year, with the Blues signing the defender to their final list spot for 2023.
Cincotta was told the news by coach Michael Voss in front of the backline group at Princes Park yesterday (Wednesday).
Less than 24 hours later, the 26-year-old is still getting his head around being an AFL player.
“I always dreamed of playing on the ‘G (MCG) as a kid, and playing for an AFL team,” Cincotta, who will wear no.39, told krockfootball.com.au.
“Now, I’m one step closer. That hasn’t quite sunk in yet, and I don’t think it will for a while.”
Cincotta’s signing by the Blues caps an incredible comeback from a severe knee injury suffered during a match simulation session while on Geelong’s VFL list in March 2020.
He lived in a gym for most of that Covid-impacted year, allowing him to rehabilitate his knee thoroughly.
Cincotta, who has filled the spot made available by a knee injury suffered by Zac Williams, joined Carlton’s VFL program ahead of the Blues’ re-entry into the competition in 2021 but managed just one game at state league level.
However, he bounced back to play every game of Carlton’s 2022 campaign, finishing runner-up in its best-and-fairest.
“It’s been a journey,” Cincotta said. “It’s definitely had its ups and downs.
“It probably hasn’t gone all my way for most of it – it’s nice to have a bit of luck.
“It’s funny how the world works. I’m extremely lucky now to have this opportunity.
“I’m grateful for where I am right now because a lot of people would love to be in my position.
“I’m definitely going to take it with both hands and give it everything I have.”
Not surprisingly, Cincotta has been in demand since the news of his signing was released.
And while it’s been chiefly well-wishes reaching out to him, Cincotta was keen to contact the man who made his move to Carlton possible, former Blues VFL coach Daniel O’Keefe.
“He was just so thrilled for me,” Cincotta said.
“He said it was amazing where I’ve come from – he said, “we could write a book on it”.
“He really believed in me.”
Cincotta, a Melbourne supporter growing up, is also grateful for the support of Newtown & Chilwell, especially president Shaun McWilliam and coach Damien McMahon.
“They’ve been massive for me,” he said.
“I played my first senior game under Damien, and Shaun was a big support for me, too.
“I’ve really got to know them personally … they’ve opened up their homes to me, and I’ve gotten to know their families.
“They’re stoked for me.”
