COLAC’S hot start to the GFNL season continued with a solid 31-point win over Grovedale in a high-scoring Round 3 matchup at Burdoo Reserve on Saturday.
Colac led all day to beat its namesake in the Tigers 18.13 (121) to 13.12 (90), in a well-rounded performance that saw Colac with six multiple goalkickers.
It sees the Tigers remain undefeated after three rounds, sitting second on the ladder behind fellow unblemished side Bell Park who sit top.
Co-coach Rowan McSparron said having a healthy side on the park has helped the team re-capture its fast-pace form after a disappointing finish to last season.
“We didn’t have those people on the park last year, which hurt,” he said.
“Leading in last year we probably lost a lot of those players prior to the finals.
“It makes a different look side when they’re actually out on the park.”
McSparron said he they let Grovedale get back into the game after a hot start in the early stages, and said after a bit of a quarter time grilling the team was able to find some consistency.
“I think in the first half of the first quarter we probably had the ball on our terms and we were using it really well.
“Our decisions were good and our execution was really good.
“In the second half of that quarter we just went away from it, we were over handballing a lot.
“When you’re looking up the ground and you’ve got the footy, I don’t know why you need to handball all the time.
“It was just a brain-fade in the second part of that first quarter which allowed them to kick some late ones which we didn’t want to see.”
Colac now returns home to Central Reserve for three home games on the trot, which starts off with a grudge match against premiership fancies St. Mary’s in Round 4.
“We obviously love playing at Central,” McSparron said.
“That being said we’ve got some challenges coming up.
“St. Mary’s rolls into South Barwon into Bell Park, so three teams that are in really good form.
“Hopefully we put a good showing in next week against St. Mary’s who’ve obviously been the benchmark for the last two or three years now.
“We want to get a gauge of where we’re at and how our footy stacks up against the best.”
