Newtown & Chilwell has added a key piece to the puzzle as it looks to end a 40-year premiership drought in 2026 following the return of Blake Sutterby.

The talented midfielder, who won two best-and-fairests during a four-season stint at Elderslie Reserve, has spent the past two seasons with junior club Geelong Amateur.

Sutterby won the Pegs’ best-and-fairest on his return to Queens Park last year and was a key part of the line-up that featured in this year’s Bellarine decider, before being overrun by Anglesea late in the contest.

He is understood to have been weighing up his decision for several weeks before informing Ammos on Monday that he was crossing back across the Barwon.

Sutterby’s return complements the signings of Dan Lowther (Lara), Cam Fowler (Ocean Grove), Nick Jephson (Kyabram), and Taj McMillan (North Ballarat).

Small forward Will O’Dwyer, who will play with Mildura-based Sunraysia league club Imperial, is the only confirmed departure for last season’s beaten semi-finalists.

Meanwhile, the Towners have added former St Kilda rookie and Werribee captain Nick Coughlan as a non-playing assistant coach under Steve Johnson.

Coughlan, who hasn’t played since suffering an Achilles injury in July 2024, will take charge of the Eagles’ backline.
