Leopold has turned to former star Sam Hughes to share the coaching role with Luke Kelly in 2026.

The two-time reigning premier, who will miss the finals for the first time since 2015, unveiled its new coaching structure last (Thursday) night.

In a statement, the Lions said Kelly, who succeeded Garry Hocking as coach for this year after a decade in the AFL system, will miss part of the 2026 season due to work commitments as High Performance Coach for Paralympic organisation Boccia Australia.

“During our end-of-season review, Luke advised the club of his ongoing commitments with Boccia Australia in 2026, which will include international travel and mean he will miss some time next season,” president Aaron Verlin said.

“We sincerely thank Luke for his openness and transparency, and commend him for the professionalism he has shown in balancing his commitments.

“To ensure consistency and stability for our Senior Football Program, the club has decided to adopt a co-coaching model for 2026.

“This approach allows Luke to continue his valuable involvement while welcoming additional leadership to the program.”

A 2016 premiership player, Hughes played 93 games in green and gold and served as an assistant coach before spending two years coaching North Cairns.

A graduate of the Geelong Falcons, he also made VFL appearances for North Ballarat and Geelong, and coached St Joseph’s College’s 1st XVIII, where he is a teacher.

Hughes has spent this year as an assistant coach with the Falcons.

“It’s really exciting to get an opportunity to come back to Leopold in a co-coaching role, working with Luke,” he said.

“This is a club that did so much for me and my football journey. I am looking forward to giving back and developing the next generation at Leopold Football Netball Club.

“The family-friendly culture is something I have always loved about our club.

“It is a big drawcard to get my own family back around the place. Growing up around a local community club is one of the best memories I have.”

Kelly, who missed the Round 6 win over South Barwon due to work commitments, welcomed the return of Hughes.

“I’m looking forward to working with, first and foremost, a quality person and also a quality coach.”

Leopold finishes its season with a clash against Bell Park at Hamlyn Park on Saturday.
