A concussion suffered by Geelong West star Jamieson Ballantyne has ended the Giants’ clash against Lara early.
In his first game since suffering a shoulder injury in Round 13, the Geelong VFL-listed midfielder was injured in a marking contest with star Cat Dylan Jose around the 17-minute mark of the final quarter at West Oval.
With West leading by 94 points and Ballantyne being treated on the field, the decision was made to end the match early.
“He took a heavy knock in the last quarter and was taken by ambulance to Geelong Hospital,” coach Greg Mellor said.
“They’re waiting on scans on his neck, but we are hopeful that he will be alright.
“He’ll spend the night in hospital, and we’ll await further information.”
It is understood the incident will be referred by the umpires to AFL Barwon’s Match Review Panel.
Ballantyne finished with three goals in a standout performance in the 19.18 (132) to 5.8 (38) result.
Veteran Pat Eastman kicked four goals to take his season tally to 23, while Riley Moore contributed two.
Zekiah Davey and Bayley Cockerill each kicked two goals for Lara, with Bayley Cockerill and Dan Weigl their best.
