PODCAST: BEYOND THE BOUNDARY – APRIL 22
St Joseph’s has suffered a blow ahead of its traditional Anzac Day meeting with South Barwon, with an ankle injury sidelining playing coach James Gow.
The star midfielder suffered the injury in the first half of the loss to Newtown & Chilwell but played out the match.
“I went over on it in a tackle,” Gow said. “I couldn’t really walk on Sunday, so I sat on the couch with the leg up,”
“The physio had a look at it on Monday and said it’s probably a couple-week injury. I’ve had a few issues with my ankles throughout my career.
“Hopefully, I’ll be back for the St. Mary’s game.”
Gow says Joeys, who last lost to South on Anzac Day in 2013, is keen to bounce back following last week’s 47-point loss to Newtown & Chilwell on the other side of Autumn Street.
Despite generating six more inside 50s than the Eagles, St Joseph’s recorded 59 forward turnovers on top of kicking 4.16.
“We were pretty disappointed the way we moved the ball forward of centre,” Gow said.
“Back half, we thought we moved the ball pretty well, but our entries and our finishing work inside 50 weren’t up to standard.
“They made us pay going the other way, so we’ve done a fair bit of work during the week on moving the ball inside 50 the way we want to and trying not to go so wide.
“Getting some shots from some better angles and giving our forwards a better opportunity.”
Gow isn’t the only forced change for St Joseph’s, with Ollie Hanneysee succumbing to another hamstring issue.
They’ve been replaced by Max Adams for his second senior game after he debuted against North Shore last year.
Francesco Posterino, who crossed back to Joeys from Newtown & Chilwell in the pre-season, will make his senior debut for the club after four games with the Eagles in 2024.
South will be without Zach Stevens, who has been selected in the AFL Victoria Young Guns game, and injured Jai Hobson (foot), Sam James (foot), and Rory Phillips (eardrum/hamstring).
They’ve been replaced by Leigham Elzinga, Max Mawson, Zac Green, and Lewis Page.
Newtown & Chilwell has named debutant Charlie Field among two changes for its Friday night meeting with North Shore at Windsor Park.
Recruited from Hamilton Kangaroos, where he won the Hampden League under-18 best-and-fairest, ahead of the 2025 season, Field spent all of last year in the reserves.
The Towners have also promoted Alfie Wojcinski. Gennaro Bove and Liam Nash have been managed.
The Seagulls have lost Brodie Clifford to a groin injury after kicking three goals in the loss to Leopold, while Xavier McGowan is unavailable.
They’ve been replaced by Daniel Gudasic and Launceston recruit Linkon Black.
St Albans has named a debutant among four changes for its meeting with Geelong West at Scaada Stadium.
St Mary’s under-18 recruit Hunter Dickson has earned senior selection, and will be joined by Bailey Brogden, who returns from injury, and promoted duo Cody Brogden and Tom Caudullo.
Hamish Andrews returns to the Geelong Falcons, with Will Lane, Sam Cunningham, and Zac Larkins omitted.
The Giants have lodged three changes.
Captain Max Kelly and livewire Noah Allen return, and forward Daniel Cole has been promoted from the reserves.
They replace Will Nicholls, Charlie Leavold, and Lachie Handley.
St Mary’s talisman Paddy Dowling and fellow premiership star Charlie Lang will return for Sunday’s meeting with Bell Park at Anthony Costa Oval.
They replace Harvey Ryan, who is in the concussion protocol, and Xavier Ivisic, who is with VFL club Werribee.
The Dragons are set to be without Eli Pearce, who will be part of the Young Guns game. He will be replaced by Euriah Hollard, who played reserves last week.
Colac has named Steve Presani for his first senior game since 2017, among four changes for its meeting with Leopold at Memorial Park.
Since his last appearance with the Tigers, Presani has played with Ocean Grove and South Colac.
Colac has also included experienced trio Joffy Simpkin, Luke Hillman, and Aaron Walters.
Tigers recruit Hunter Wright will feature in the Young Guns game, Will Parkhouse has a fractured eye socket, and Billy Buchanan and Darcy Howard have been omitted.
Former captain Marcus Thompson and Geelong VFL duo Mason Williams and Will Sheahan return for Leopold.
More to come
