A humble Fletcher Hughes says he wouldn’t be the talented ruckman he’s become without the faith shown by current and former coaches at St Mary’s.
Speaking after winning the Frank Fopiani Medal as best-on-ground in the Saints’ 20-point GFNL grand final win over South Barwon, he says Glenn Keast, who handed the Portarlington product his senior debut in 2024, and incumbents Luke Rayner and Ben Boseley have been crucial to his evolution, which resulted in playing VFL finals with Port Melbourne this year.
“Both places have been awesome,” Hughes said.
“Port Melbourne have really tried to work on my strengths, and St Mary’s were the first people to give me a real chance, so I owe them so much.
“Bose and Raynes and even back to Keasty, they’ve been so good for me; just having faith in me to go out there and do what I can do on a weekend.”
