Leopold has cemented its spot in the top five following a convincing win against sixth-placed South Barwon on a blustery Saturday at McDonald Reserve.
The Lions took control early in the game and never looked troubled, extending their lead at every break, with a final score of 73 (10.13) to 37 (4.13).
Leopold coach Garry Hocking, who signed a three-year extension to his coaching contract only last Thursday, said conditions on the day were “extremely awful” and “never really suited either side”.
“We just probably handled the conditions a little bit better, got some scores on the board and put a bit of pressure back on them,” he said.
“It was good to win there and cement ourselves inside the top five.
Hocking explained the win was vital for the club’s position on the ladder.
“We were sitting just inside the five as of a week or two ago, and we knew this was a crucial game to get the two-game buffer,” he added.
The victory was Leopold’s sixth in a row and gives them plenty of confidence as they prepare to take on ninth-placed Grovedale this Saturday at Burdoo Reserve.
Beyond that, the competition will be getting a bit tougher for the Lions, with finals-bound Colac, St Mary’s, St Joseph’s and Newtown & Chilwell
“It’s going to be a solid sort of block of games that we’ve got,” he said.
“We’re going to call it ‘Big Boy month’, and we’re just going to have to stand up and test ourselves against the best teams.”
