Those hoping for a bit of variety in the top five are likely to be disappointed if the captains’ opinions count for anything.
Each captain has tipped Colac, St Joseph’s and St Mary’s to feature in September action, with fellow 2019 finalists Leopold and Newtown & Chilwell tipped by six skippers to finish top five.
Bell Park and South Barwon were the only other clubs to receive votes.
After providing us with one of the greatest GFL grand finals in 2019, the Tigers and Saints are seen as the two clubs most likely to feature in the final match of the season.
Joeys, who were beaten preliminary finalists in 2019, received one vote.
After finishing runner-up to Matt McMahon in 2019, Bell Park captain Lachie Patten has been backed by five captains to go one better and win his first Mathieson Medal this year.
Leopold star Marcus Thompson, who finished fifth in 2019, was tipped by two skippers.
South Barwon star Andrew Boseley is favourite to become just the fifth player in GFL history to win consecutive goalkicking awards.
Five captains have tipped Boseley to top the table, with returning Lara spearhead Mitch Day (three) and Grovedale’s Cam Delaney (two) also receiving support.
