ST. JOSEPH’S has slumped to fifth place on the GFNL ladder after being beaten by 49-points to arch-rivals St Mary’s at Drew Oval on Sunday.
The Saints dominated from the outset, leading at every break – going on to win the Round 12 clash 12.16 (88) to 5.9 (39).
The reigning premiers were wasteful in front of goal early, kicking 1.9 in the first term, going into quarter time with a seven-point lead despite holding the ascendancy in the early stages.
Player of the day Dion Johnstone booted four goals for the Saints and told K rock Football postgame, St. Joey’s were better in the air, but the Saints worked much better in the individual clashes.
“I think we’re pretty good one-on-one and we get on a lead and lower the eyes and we’re pretty tough to stop once we get it out there, so it was good to have some space,” Johnstone said.
After crossing from North Warrnambool in the Hampden League at the start of this year, Johnstone said it was great to get a good haul as he finds his feet at his new side.
“I’ve been in a bit of a slump lately with my goalkicking, but it was nice to finally get the reward and I think today was my day,” he said.
“But footy changes so quickly, next week it’ll be someone else, so it was good to get on the end of a few today.”
St Mary’s holds onto the top of the ladder on percentage from Colac Tigers with the Saints to take on Geelong West for Round 13 this Saturday.
St. Joseph’s will host South Barwon as part of the TAC’s ‘Band Together’ round, raising awareness for road safety.
