Tom Gunther has become the second Lara player to find a new home since the Cats placed their senior and reserves football teams into recess for 2026.

Runner-up in last year’s best-and-fairest, the Shaun Ballans Medal, Gunther has signed with GFNL rivals St Albans after first being linked with the Supersaints in late November.

The talented 21-year-old has played 70 games and kicked 66 goals since making his senior debut in early 2022.

Gunther kicked 25 goals in an eight-game stretch to end the 2024 season, highlighted by a haul of eight against North Shore.

“Tom is a proven young talent who has already built a strong reputation as a high-impact player,” a statement on the St Albans Facebook page said.

“Strong overhead, tough in the contest, clean around the ball, and dangerous around goal.

“He can play forward or roll through the midfield, and at only 21, he brings serious upside.”

Gunther averaged 32.8 disposals, of which 14.3 were contested, nine clearances, eight marks, and five inside 50s per game in 2025.

He is the second Lara player to find a new home in the past week, with best-and-fairest Darby Henderson putting pen to paper at Leopold.

St Albans has been one of the GFNL’s most active outfits, with additions including former North Melbourne forward Eddie Ford, who has nominated the Supersaints as his interchange club when not required by Collingwood’s VFL team, and ex-Northern Bullant Ethan Mantas.
