Tigers turn to a familiar face

September 14, 2023 8:03 pm in by

Grovedale has turned to former assistant coach Jacob Spolding as its new coach.

Spolding, an assistant coach at grand final-bound GFNL rivals South Barwon, spent 2021 and 2022 at the Tigers under former coach Daniel Fraser.

It will be his second stint in charge of a GFNL club, having guided the fortunes of Newtown & Chilwell as a playing coach from 2011-2013.

Spolding, who also has 139 VFL games at North Ballarat and Geelong and two premierships with the Roosters resume, then spent five years as an assistant coach with VFL club Werribee and two years at Talent League team GWV Rebels.

An Ocean Grove junior, Spolding was part of the Geelong Falcons’ star-studded premiership-winning TAC Cup team in 2000.

His signing continues the good news for Grovedale, with 2021 GFNL leading goalkicker Tom Gillett confirmed as returning to the club last week.

Spolding will be part of South Barwon’s coaching staff on GFNL grand final day before officially stepping into his new role with the Tigers.

The Swans will face the winner of Saturday’s St Mary’s-Leopold preliminary final in the decider.
