St Mary’s hasn’t ruled out giving Nick Connors until the morning of Friday’s GFNL grand final against St Joseph’s to prove he has overcome a knee injury.
The 2019 premiership hero missed the preliminary final win over Colac after suffering a knee injury in the first semi-final victory over Newtown & Chilwell.
Co-coach Ben Boseley says a ligament in Connors’s kneecap is proving to be an issue.
“We’ll give Chipper as long as he can to recover and prove to us that he’s right to play,” co-coach Ben Boseley told K rock Football following the victory over the Tigers.
“And you guys know Chipper; he’s the ultimate professional. We’re really going to back him in.
“But the same is, if he’s not right, Chipper will put his hand up and let us know.
“We’ve got 22 players that are keen to go.
“Look, (it was) quite sad for Chipper last week, what occurred.
“But at the end of the day, he’s got to do all he can, and we’ll pick 22 fit boys.”
Connors’ last appearance on GMHBA Stadium was when he kicked the winning goal to defeat Colac in the 2019 grand final.
Since that day, he’s been one of St Mary’s most durable players, playing 87 of a possible 92 matches.
If Connors does prove his fitness, Boseley and co-coach Luke Rayner would have a tough task at selection.
Star defender Ryan Pendlebury replaced Connors for the win over Colac, but he will retain his place in the team.
