Suspensions from attending AFL Barwon-sanctioned fixtures for up to 10 months are among the penalties handed down in the wake of an ugly crowd brawl at a junior match during the season.
It follows an inquiry into the incident at Howard Harmer Oval during a Barwon Heads-Lara under-16 Division 2 match on Saturday, July 26.
After a lengthy investigation by an independent officer, which involved examining a range of footage of the fracas, AFL Barwon says a range of suspensions and reprimands were also handed down.
Footage seen by K rock Football showed an off-field fight under the main pavilion that players eventually became embroiled in.
Police attended the scene but no official complaints were made.
“AFL Barwon reaffirms its position that it does not tolerate unsociable or antisocial behaviours at any level of competition under its governance. Such actions are unacceptable and stand in direct contrast to the expectations of community sport,” a statement released this (Tuesday) morning said.
“Community football and netball should always provide a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for participants, volunteers, officials, and spectators alike. AFL Barwon remains dedicated to working with our clubs, participants, and the wider community to uphold these values and ensure that junior sport continues to be a place where young people can participate safely.”
Both clubs have been contacted for comment.
