DOUBT now hovers over whether the AFL Barwon under-19 and senior women’s seasons will go ahead.
It follows the Victorian Government’s decision to delay a return to full-contact training and competition due to a rise in COVID-19 cases across the state.
Full-contact training was due to start for people aged 19 and over from this Monday, with contact competition allowed from Monday, July 20.
AFL Barwon had planned to start the under-19 season on August 1, with the senior women set to start the following day.
“With a significant increase in coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in Melbourne and active cases in a number of many regional communities, the Chief Health Officer has determined that community sport in regional Victoria must remain non-contact,” a statement from the Victorian Government said.
For players aged 18 and under in areas outside of metropolitan and Mitchell Shire, full training and competition can continue.
Further easing of restrictions, including target dates, will be considered by Professor (Brett) Sutton by the end of July.”
AFL Barwon said it will assess the situation in coming days.
Junior football and netball competition (under-17 and below) are due to begin next Saturday.
