GEELONG Falcons Girls coach Jason Armistead will use this weekend’s two practice matches against the GWV Rebels to get a better indication of what his team will look like for Round 1.
Up to 35 players are in contention for a spot in the twenty-two to take on Sandringham at Frankston on March 3 in what Armistead sees as a good problem to have.
“That (practice match) will probably tell a tale a little bit with some players,” he said.
“With some of them, we’re still not sure where they’re best suited to play for our team. This weekend will give us a good indication.
“We’ll definitely be picking from 35 players at the moment.
“Our depth was a strength last year, but it’s even stronger this year.”
FALCONS GIRLS: LUCY TO LEAD AGAIN
The Falcons, who won last year’s TAC Cup premiership have settled on a list of 48 for the nine-round competition, which is still without an official name after the TAC withdrew from its partnership with AFL Victoria.
Armistead says with a significant turnover of the list going into their third season compared to the change from season one to season two.
“We were lucky last year; we had a great core group of players that played in the first season,” he said.
“This year, a lot of them have gone on to AFL and VFL, so there is a lot bigger turnover.
“There’s probably 30 girls that haven’t played at this level before.”
After storming to last year’s premiership without a loss, Armistead says it’s unfair to think the Falcons can replicate that feat in 2019.
Thirteen of that team have graduated from the program, including stars like Nina Morrison, Olivia Purcell and Denby Taylor.
“We haven’t really mentioned last year at all,” Armistead said.
“Apart from trying to give them some ideas on what made our team really strong last year, we haven’t really referred to the premiership.
“We just looking forward to seeing what we can create this year as a group.”
