Falcons fall out of top three

A LACK of winners across the ground contributed to the Geelong Falcons’ second loss of the NAB League Boys season, according to stand-in coach Rob Condy.

Missing several key players due to Vic Country duty, illness and injury, the Falcons suffered an 18-point loss to country rivals Murray Bushrangers at Werribee’s Avalon Airport Oval, 13.7 (85) to 9.13 (67), to surrender its place inside the top three on the ladder.

“It was hard to find a winner today because we were quite fumbly in the contest, which brought on a lot of pressure from the opposition,” Condy, who was filling in for Paul Corrigan, said.

“Credit to the boys, we battled it out; we ended up having more scoring shots on the board,

But our method just wasn’t there because we were double-touchy and invited a lot of pressure from Murray, who were really good.”

Finishing in the top three affords those teams a bye through the wildcard weekend and direct passage to the NAB League finals.

The loss has the Falcons two points behind both second-placed Dandenong and third-placed Tasmania, which has one less game remaining in its home-and-away season.

“That’s why we walk out with a little bit of a sour taste in our mouth,” Condy said.

“We thought we had opportunities at times, but we just couldn’t get the job done.”

After six goals last week, acting captain Euriah Hollard finished with two goals and 22 possessions to lead from the front.

Angus Hastie was also busy with 23 disposals, while Cooper Hayes and Will Baker had 20 apiece.

The Falcons will have next weekend off ahead of a clash with the Bendigo Pioneers back at Avalon Airport Oval on Sunday, June 10.
