GEELONG Falcons coach Paul Corrigan has hailed his teams’ ability to handle GWV Rebels’ pressure following a 40-point win at Mars Stadium.
The Falcons took until the second quarter to shake off the determined Rebels before running away to a fourth-straight victory, 11.4 (70) to 4.6 (30).
“Knowing that the contest was going to be pretty strong, and they were going to be pretty fierce around it, with their pressure, we handled it really well,” Corrigan said.
“I think we had to bide our time in being able to open up the game with our foot skills and taking the ball to space and getting better (forward) entries off the back of it.
“We mixed up the forward line a bit – the way we wanted to structure up – at half-time, and that gave us a bit more space and isolation, and we were able to hit the scoreboard a bit more easily after quarter time.”
Analea McKee continued her fine first half of the season for the Falcons
The 183cm key forward kicked 3.1 from her disposals. She also took eight marks and laid four tackles.
“She provided a really good target up high for us,” Corrigan said.
“Keeley Hardingham in the ruck was sensational again with efforts around the ground, and her contest stuff and her smarts around the ball.
“I thought Chloe Adams (22 disposals) was sensational onball for us. She found a lot of it.”
Corrigan was also impressed by South Barwon product Lucy Maresuk, who finished with 13 disposals across half-forward.
“She provided a lot of forward pressure, keeping the ball locked in for us, and she hit the scoreboard as well,” he said.
Earlier in the day, the Falcons had the better of the Rebels in their first Futures match of 2022, 10.6 (66) to 3.1 (19).
The Falcons will look to extend their winning streak to five when they travel to Westbourne Grammar for a meeting with the Western Jets next Saturday.
