Hood not looking too far ahead

February 14, 2019 6:15 pm in by

PAUL Hood is well aware of how quickly the truncated AFLW season will disappear.

But the Geelong coach is refusing to buy into the discussion about his team’s finals hopes despite sitting second on the ladder after the opening two rounds of a season lasting just seven weeks.

The Cats, who have a cross-conference meeting with Adelaide on Sunday are one of just two teams in Conference B (Brisbane is the other) to have posted a victory in the opening fortnight.

“We haven’t really looked at the ladder,” Hood said.

“It’s Round 2, so it’s not really part of our focus at the moment.

“Our focus is just trying to be as competitive as we can and win the game that we’re in.

“If we do enough of that, it (the ladder) will look after itself.”

After a narrow loss to the Western Bulldogs in Round 1, the Crows came from 17 points down during the third quarter to beat Carlton at IKON Park last week.

Stevie-Lee Thompson was the star for Adelaide with four goals, but all eyes will be which Geelong defender gets the first crack at Crows spearhead Sarah Perkins.

Vice-captain Bec Goring and former Bulldog Meg McDonald loom as the likely candidates.

“It will be a mixture of both, I think,” Hood said. “Both Bec and Meg last week worked well against Katie Brennan and kept Katie to one point.

“Sarah’s a terrific player. She’s got fantastic skills, and if she gets the ball in her hands she can really hurt you on the scoreboard.

“They will be doing their best to make sure she can’t get it, and the rest of the team has to make sure that Adelaide doesn’t get to deliver it to her on a plate because if she gets good delivery, she’s really effective.

“We played against her in the VFLW season and the same thing happened there.”
