THE region’s clubs will have a say on what junior football looks like into the future as part of an AFL Barwon review.

A survey was sent to clubs earlier this week, with questions covering the appropriateness of age groups, preferred age groups for 2021 and the introduction of an under-8s competition.

Four options for preferred age groups have been put on the table:

  • Under 19, 17, 15, 13, 11, 10, 9
  • Under 18.5, 17, 15, 13, 11, 10, 9
  • Under 18.5, 16, 14, 12, 11, 10, 9
  • Under 18, 16, 14, 12, 11, 10, 9

Clubs have also been asked which age group their club has the biggest challenge fielding teams in, whether an under-19 age group is appropriate, and is there adequate time for changes to be made from the current structure.

“Our region is fortunate to have strong participation across junior football,” AFL Barwon Region General Manager Will McGregor said.

“That said, it was identified that a review into the junior age groups needed to be undertaken following feedback from stakeholders.”

“It is our responsibility and duty to listen to all of our key stakeholders and review anything that will ensure the long-term sustainability of clubs and its associate members.

“This will be a collaborative and thorough review of junior male football age groups that will establish appropriate
recommendations.”

AFL Barwon has also revealed plans for a long-term strategy for female football, with more details to be released next month.
