GEELONG Falcons will field up to a dozen first-timers when it hosts Bendigo Pioneers at Colac’s Central Reserve to open the NAB League Boys season on Sunday afternoon.

It will also be the first match in charge for Luke Daffy since replacing 2017 premiership coach Daniel O’Keefe at the end of last year.

“I’m really excited. It’s been a bit of a wait to get through from Christmas time into the games,” he said.

“But after our final trial (game) last week, it was that next stage now where we can look forward to Round 1.

“It’s exciting for me. Being in the program for four or five years, you’ve seen how it unfolds, and to get an opportunity to kickstart it’s nice.”

Daffy hasn’t made massive changes to the structure put in place during O’Keefe’s two years in charge, with fundamentals a focus over summer.

“We worked really hard on our kicking and our craft skills for the players particularly relevant to their lines,” he said.

“Hopefully that will transfer into a game; when the boys are under pressure, they’ll execute those fundamental skills really well.”
