Controversial Officiating Sparks Outrage
Queensland’s thrilling 26-24 win over New South Wales in Game II of the State of Origin series has ignited a storm of controversy. Referee Ashley Klein is at the centre of it all, with NSW commentators and former players furious over a lopsided penalty count that saw Queensland receive the first nine penalties. By half-time, it was 8-0 in Queensland’s favour, ending 10-2 overall.

Calls for Referee to Be Stood Down
Former players Jarryd Hayne, Jamie Soward, and ex-coach Phil Gould pointed to the penalty count as a major factor in the Blues’ defeat. Gould said the penalties, along with NSW’s own errors, gave Queensland an easy ride. Soward added that Klein was “doing his best to get in the way.” Some even questioned whether Queensland’s earlier meeting with the referee influenced the game.

NSW’s Own Mistakes Proved Costly
While the refereeing came under fire, NSW captain Isaah Yeo admitted his side made costly mistakes. “We were our own worst enemy at times,” he said, noting that 50/50 calls didn’t go their way. Crucially, Zac Lomax missed three of five conversion attempts, with two striking the post, costing the Blues the game.

Queensland’s Grit and Passion Shine Through
Despite the drama, Queensland’s defensive effort in the final minutes sealed a heroic win. Captain Cameron Munster praised coach Billy Slater, calling him the heart of the team. The Maroons’ gutsy performance now sets up a high-stakes decider in Sydney.
