CAPTAIN Mel Hickey will miss the chance to lead out Geelong in its first AFL Women’s match on Saturday night after failing in her bid to prove she’s fully recovered from a serious knee injury.
Hickey suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in March last year while playing for Melbourne and had been eyeing off a return in the Cats’ historic clash with Collingwood.
It means inaugural Geelong VFL Women’s captain Bec Goring will create a bit of history, with the AFLW vice-captain to skipper the team.
The Cats also couldn’t consider Richelle Cranston (suspension), Elise Coventry (knee), Hayley Trevean (hip), Erin Hoare (foot) and Hannah Burchell (knee).
Geelong Falcons trio Nina Morrison, Liv Purcell and Denby Taylor will all debut, as will fellow TAC Cup products Becky Webster and Sophie Van De Heuvel.
K rock will be live across Geelong & the Surf Coast on FM 95.5 from 6:30pm
