A STRONG contingent of Geelong Falcons has been named in the Vic Country under-19 girls squad ahead of April’s National Championships.

Seven Falcons are part of the 27-member squad, which Falcons mentor Paul Corrigan is coaching.

Vice-captain Poppy Schaap, key forward Renee Tierney, midfielder Tess Craven, winger Ingrid Houtsma, forward Gabbi Featherston and defenders Annie Lee and Lizzy Dowling have all been rewarded for their strong starts to the season.

It’s further recognition for Tierney and Lee, who have made an appearance at VFLW level with Geelong.

“I think it says a lot for the Geelong region, that girls and women’s footy is heading in the right direction,” Corrigan said.

“We’ve got a lot of talent coming through in our younger stocks, and I think it’s only going to get better.

“To see these girls get an opportunity, which is fully deserved, at Vic Country level, I hope they can really enjoy what’s ahead of them.

“And, hopefully, they put their best foot forward, and there might be bigger and brighter things for them at the end of it.”
