GWS co-captain Phil Davis has declared he should be fit to play in Saturday’s AFL grand final against Richmond despite picking up multiple knocks in the dramatic preliminary final win over Collingwood.
The key defender suffered finger, knee and back issues but stressed there was no calf injury, as initially reported.
“I pulled up really well. I had a good night’s sleep and am feeling really good, so there shouldn’t be any dramas for this weekend,” said Davis on Sunday.
Questioned about his calf, Davis said: ‘It’s more my back, I’ve got a few back issues.
“I bowled a few too many overs as a young fella playing cricket, so it’s causing a bit of grief sometimes.
“I’ve had a few things with my calves in my time, but it’s more my back.
“Generally the calf is totally fine and feeling really good today.”
Davis played most of Saturday’s game in the forward line due to his injuries but said he would definitely return to the back for the grand final.
He was philosophical about copping a number of knocks against Collingwood on Saturday.
“It was just one of those days for me unfortunately where I’d just get moving and something happens again,” he said.
Davis said vice-captain Stephen Coniglio was pretty confident of being able to play on Saturday despite missing the past nine games with a knee injury.
He said speedster Lachie Whitfield was very confident of returning to face the Tigers despite having had appendix surgery last Wednesday, which kept him out of the preliminary final.
