Ex-Swan named a Saints leader

HIGH-profile St Kilda recruit Dan Hannebery will form part of a new-look leadership group in his first AFL season with the Saints.

Coach Alan Richardson has elevated the former Sydney midfielder into the group led by skipper Jarryn Geary for a third-straight season.

Richardson couldn’t bring himself to leave 2012 premiership winner Hannebery out of his five-man leadership team as the Saints attempt to rebound from a dismal four-win season.

“Dan is an extremely experienced leader who has had (an) immediate impact since joining us late last year,” Richardson said.

“Having a player with such strong football knowledge, who is also so generous in the time he gives to his teammates, is a real asset to the football club.”

Three-time All-Australian Hannebery battled issues with his body in his final season with the Swans before he crossed to the Saints on a five-year deal.

He’ll join new vice-captain Seb Ross, forward Tim Membrey and the returning Dylan Roberton as Geary’s four deputies for 2019.

Jack Newnes and Jack Steven were overlooked for leadership positions after serving under Geary last year.

“While they will not play an official leadership role this year their influence on the group is still really strong and I have no doubt that will continue,” Richardson said.
