Saints keep Tigers’ goalless to claim second win

WINLESS Richmond’s maiden AFLW season went from bad to worse as they were held goalless in a 39-point thumping from fellow newcomers St Kilda.

Cult hero Caitlin Greiser kicked three goals for the Saints in their 6.6 (42) to 0.3 (3) win at Moorabbin on Saturday.

All of the scoring was done at the northern end of the ground until midway through the final term as windy conditions made it difficult for both sides to produce clean passages of play, particularly when kicking into the breeze.

Richmond produced the lowest match tally in AFLW history and became the first team to fail to kick a goal.

Their total was marginally worse than the 1.1 (7) totals kicked by West Coast six days earlier and Geelong in a preliminary final last year.

It left the Tigers bottom of Conference A with a 0-6 record.

Monique Conti was outstanding with 21 disposals in a losing side but had few teammates capable of putting up a fight against a dominant Saints side.

Rosie Dillon (17 disposals), Olivia Vesely (16), Georgia Patrikios (14) and Molly McDonald (12) were all busy as St Kilda led from start to finish.

Greiser opened the scoring in the first term when she converted a free kick from 15-metres, and she added a second after a strong mark.

They were the only two goals of the first half as both sides controlled field position when they had the strong breeze at the backs.

St Kilda made better use of it, kicking 2.1 in the first term to the Tigers’ 0.2 in the second.

Another two unanswered goals in the third quarter through Greiser and Kate Shierlaw put the result beyond doubt.
